Birth: February 1896 Camden, NSW, Australia Death: 10 August 1918 (age 22) Pozieres, France, Killed in Action Cemetery or Memorial: Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France Father: William Charles NEWTON (1863 - 1949) Mother: Mary Ann BASHFORTH (1860 - 1926) Milton gave his occupation as Grocer's Assistant when he enlisted 15 July 1915 at Melbourne, and his next of kin his father Mr. W.C. Newton of Castlemaine. Milton served in the 5th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Melbourne on the 'Demosthenes' 29 December 1915 and arrived France via Egypt April 1916. He was admitted to hospital France suffering from Trench Fever May 1917 and rejoined his unit in June 1917. Milton's brothers (Private 196) William John Newton (b. Camden 1894) and (Lance Corporal 195) Arthur Newton (b. Camden 1897) both served in the 39th Battalion A.I.F. in France and returned to Australia. Private Milton James NEWTON was killed in action at Pozieres France on 10 August 1918 age 22.
